Abstract
AFTER COMPLETING THIS TRAINING UNIT, THE LEARNER SHOULD BE ABLE TO RECOGNIZE BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT DRUGS AND DRUG ABUSE. SPECIFIC TASKS INCLUDE IDENTIFYING DRUG DEPENDENCE AND DRUG ABUSE, IDENTIFYING TYPES OF DRUGS (ALCOHOL, TOBACCO, CAFFEINE, ILLEGAL DRUGS, STIMULANTS, DEPRESSANTS, HALLUCINOGENS), RECOGNIZING WHY PEOPLE ABUSE DRUGS, KNOWING ABOUT DRUG EFFECTS, AND UNDERSTANDING WAYS TO AVOID DRUG ABUSE. THE MANUAL INCLUDES A LIST OF LEARNING GOALS AND SUBGOALS, DIRECTIONS FOR USING THE MANUAL, UNIT PRETEST AND POSTTEST, ILLUSTRATED DISCUSSION OF DRUGS AND DRUG ABUSE, REVIEW QUESTIONS, UNIT TEST KEY, WORD LIST, AND BLANK SPACE FOR TEACHER'S NOTES. THE MANUAL IS PART OF A CURRICULUM MATERIALS PACKAGE DEVELOPED BY THE AMERICAN CORRECTIONAL ASSOCIATION (ACA) AS PART OF A DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM, FUNDED BY A LEAA GRANT, WAS IMPLEMENTED IN FOUR LOCAL JAILS IN 1979. TITLED COORDINATED COMMUNITY OFFENDER EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMS (CCOEP), IT IS DESIGNED TO INCREASE INMATES' EMPLOYABILITY AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES BY TEACHING CONSUMER AND LIFE SKILLS NEEDED TO COPE IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY AS WELL AS SKILLS RELATED TO LOCATING AND FINDING EMPLOYMENT. ALTHOUGH DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR ADULT INMATES IN CITY AND COUNTY JAILS, THE PROGRAM CAN BE ADAPTED TO JUVENILES AND TO OTHER TYPES OF INSTITUTIONS. FOR OTHER COMPONENTS OF THE TRAINING MATERIALS PACKAGE, SEE NCJ 63908-24. (CFW)
