On the basis of 3 years of experience as a psychiatric assistant in a Twin Cities hospital, the author argues that placement in a psychiatric ward is essentially abusive to status offenders.
Abstract
He points out that many of these young people have been abused, but that they are treated on the ward not as abused children, but as problem children. Being locked up, having to follow treatment plans, being threatened with isolation and medication, and being treated by insecure staff with insufficient training are all, this author argues, abusive.
