An educational abuse prevention program is described that is designed to provide information and training on sexual, physical, and emotional abuse to correctional managers and staff and inmates at the Saskatoon Correctional Centre (SCC) in Canada.
Abstract
The preventive focus of the program represents a unique and cost-effective service delivery method. The program relies on a preventive and institutionally focused approach, uses correctional staff as facilitators, involves mandatory inmate participation, and emphasizes a problem-solving responsibility model. The specific model used to develop the abuse prevention program at SCC is based on a cognitive-behavioral orientation, and intervention strategies require networking between SCC staff and outside agencies. The program covers human sexuality and communication, physical abuse of children, partner and spousal abuse, sexual abuse and sexual offenders, sex offender treatment, various forms of abusive behaviors, and how men can learn not to be abusive. The program represents a comprehensive approach that targets sexual, physical, and emotional abuse and uses an interactive problem-solving model to present information to participants. 25 references, 6 endnotes, 1 table, and 1 photograph
