This bulletin lists guidelines for police officers entering crime scenes or collecting physical evidence in situations where bodily fluids containing the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) virus or other contagious diseases exists.
Abstract
Officers should wear disposable plastic or rubber gloves, wash their hands with soap and water after contacting bodily fluids, handle all evidence, clothing, or other material carefully, and decontaminate all nondisposable materials. They should also avoid eating, drinking, or smoking at the scene. Guidelines on collecting and preserving physical evidence cover blood, clothing and shoes, fibers, hair, and semen stain. They explain how to collect and package the evidence and the special precautions to take. List of hotlines and resource organizations, six publications, 18 references, and forms.
