THIS FILM, DESIGNED FOR USE IN POLICE OFFICER TRAINING, TEACHES OFFICERS HOW TO DETERMINE IF ABANDONED CARS ARE STOLEN.
Abstract
POLICE OFFICERS MUST KNOW THE VARIOUS THINGS TO LOOK FOR WHEN INSPECTING AN ABANDONED CAR. WHEN APPROACHING THE CAR, THE OFFICER IS INSTRUCTED TO LOOK FOR ANY EVIDENCE, SUCH AS FOOTPRINTS OR TIRE TRACKS, IN THE GENERAL AREA. HE SHOULD BE CAREFUL NOT TO DISTURB ANY FINGERPRINTS WHICH MAY BE ON THE DOOR OR LICENSE PLATE. THE LICENSE PLATES SHOULD BE CHECKED TO SEE IF THEY ARE STOLEN OR IF THEY BELONG TO THAT CAR, AND ALSO IF THEY HAVE BEEN ALTERED IN ANY WAY. THE MODEL STYLE, YEAR, COLOR, AND VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER SHOULD ALL BE NOTED SO THAT OTHER CHECKS CAN BE MADE ON THE CAR. THE CAR SHOULD ALSO BE INSPECTED ON THE INSIDE FOR ANY SIGNS OF EVIDENCE, SUCH AS GUNS OR MAPS, AND LOCAL RESIDENTS SHOULD BE INTERVIEWED TO SEE HOW LONG THE CAR HAS BEEN THERE AND IF THEY SAW THE PERSON WHO LEFT IT. THIS FILM POINTS OUT THE MANY DETAILS AN OFFICER SHOULD LOOK FOR WHEN HE SUSPECTS THAT A CAR HAS BEEN STOLEN AND ABANDONED. (BAC)
