This book, intended for use by local government officials, law enforcement agencies, and community group leaders involved in crime prevention and community building, describes 150 crime control strategies.

Abstract

The strategies are defined as broad concepts in crime prevention and community building. The collection of strategies includes insights and examples of success from throughout the United States. Communities profiled in the strategies have a population of 50,000 or less, and the focus is on local programs that have been implemented for at least 2 years. The collection of strategies includes law enforcement-community partnerships that have reduced crime and prevented revictimization, community events that have garnered support for youth and crime prevention, examples of neighborhoods revitalized by community-local government-private sector partnerships, and the contribution of technology to community patrols. The strategies are organized according to alcohol and other drugs, children and families, community education and awareness, local businesses as partners, police-community partnerships, property crime, safety of the elderly, safe public places, violence, and youth crime prevention and intervention. A chart of over 100 resource organizations is included.
