STUDY TO DETERMINE THE RELATIVE NUMBER OF VICTIMS AND THEIR AWARENESS OF CRIME BY SOCIAL AND ETHNIC GROUPS IN THE BEDFORD-STUYVESANT/FORT GREENE AREA OF NEW YORK.
THE SURVEY SHOWED THAT RESPONDENTS OF EACH OF THE FOUR RACE-ETHNIC GROUPS OF BLACKS, BRITISH WEST INDIANS, PUERTO RICANS, AND WHITES REPORT ROUGHLY THE SAME RATES OF VICTIMIZATION AND ARE SIMILAR IN PROPORTIONS OF THOSE WHO PERCEIVE THAT CRIME IN THE AREA IS HIGH. HOWEVER, RATES SOMETIMES VARIED AMONG OR WITHIN THESE GROUPS ACCORDING TO SUCH FACTORS AS AGE, CHURCH ATTENDANCE, PREVIOUS VICTIMIZATION, LENGTH OF RESIDENCY, RELATIVES IN THE AREA, AND HAVING BEEN OFFERED STOLEN GOODS. INCLUDED ARE A REVIEW OF RELEVANT LITERATURE AND PERCENTAGE TABLES FOR EACH FACTOR IN THE STUDY.
