This fact sheet describes the vision, mission, and organizational structure of the National Youth Network (NYN), which was founded and is managed by the U.S. Justice Department's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) for the purpose of promoting and guiding the involvement of youth in crime-prevention and crime-victim services in their communities.
Abstract
The NYN regularly holds national meetings that draw youth leaders from across the Nation to discuss ways the youth organizations they represent can develop projects that prevent crime and violence in their communities. The unique component of these meetings is the planning partnership between youth and adults. All work done by the NYN is reviewed and approved by OJJDP. "Teens, Crime, and the Community" is a project funded by OJJDP to coordinate the daily operations of the Network. The sponsors provide financial, technical, and material resources for the participating youth. The Network is organized into five committees of youth and sponsoring adults. Each committee has priorities they hope to accomplish during the continuing development of the Network. The committees are the Events Committee, the Publications Committee, the Public Policy Committee, the Public Relations Committee, and the Sponsors/Outreach Committee. The responsibilities of each of these committees are described in this fact sheet.
