NIJ activities for FY 2016 are reported under the broad categories of law enforcement; violence and victimization; crime; corrections; forensic science, technology, and evidence; capacity building and technical assistance; highlights of dissemination; and appended financial data. NIJ activities related to law enforcement pertain to the development of law enforcement leadership, the promotion of officer safety and wellness, assessment of the impact of DNA testing, the application of new technology to crime-scene investigation, and ensuring procedural justice. Activities that addressed violence and victimization included long-term research on interpersonal violence, prevention of elder abuse, increased understanding of violence against women, and making schools safer. NIJ activities that focused on crime pertain to human trafficking, radicalization, firearms, and drugs and crime. Activities that focused on corrections addressed female inmate experiences, patterns of incarceration, and restrictive housing of inmates. NIJ activities related to forensic science, technology, and evidence address the privacy of victims and witnesses; research and development in forensic science; research and evaluation in publicly funded forensic laboratories; improving the detection of child pornography; and the provision of graduate research fellowships in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. NIJ activities related to capacity building and technical assistance focused on grants, training, and guidance in various criminal justice endeavors. Highlights are reported on various NIJ efforts to disseminate the priorities, research findings, and results from its grant activities.
