This flyer published by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) presents data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health to provide insight on depression among youth ages 12-17. The graphics show that 1 in 5 youth between the ages of 12 and 17 had a major depressive episode (MDE) in 2022. Of those who had an MDE, nearly half received treatment for depression. The graphics also show that 1 in 7 youth between the ages of 12 and 17 had a MDE with severe impairment in 2022. Eight in 10 youth who experienced a MDE in 2022 perceived the COVID pandemic as having had an negative impact on their health.
