This video with transcript presents an interview with Wendy Stiver - a commander with the Dayton Police Department (Ohio) and a Class of 2016 scholar of the National Institute of Justice's (NIJ's) Law Enforcement Advancing Data and Science (LEADS) Program - who discusses her work as a LEADS scholar in researching interventions for patrol officer exposure to "subcritical" trauma or incidents.
Abstract
For the purposes of her research, she identified a "subcritical" incident as any event that might cause some additional stress in a responding officer, such as a homicide or dealing with an infant's death. She indicates that the intent of her study was to identify "a reasonable intervention where we can reach out to those officers and give them some kind of assistance to help manage this cumulative effect." She notes that the LEADS Program has given her opportunities to develop some ideas for research on this issue and obtain access to resources and contacts from a variety of police agencies across the country.
