The case studies represent a wide range of programs which are underway in many cities. They include a community- based gang prevention effort in Aurora, Colorado; a program to prevent students in Carlsbad, California from dropping out of school and committing crime; a juvenile justice program in Carlsbad that aims to show youth that they are accountable for their actions and to direct youth and families to appropriate community services; and a community- oriented policing and problem-solving system in Hayward, California. Other case studies focus on a public housing community policing program in Columbia, South Carolina; a conditional discharge program for substance abuse offenders in Columbus, Georgia; a drug task force as a police- community partnership in Elkhart, Indiana; and a tutoring program in Fort Pierce, Florida in which police officers and community residents volunteer their time to help elementary school children. Additional case studies describe a program in the Orlando, Florida Police Department to reduce paperwork and increase police productivity; a school resource police officer program in St. Petersburg, Florida; a domestic violence program in University City, Missouri; and a police/social worker victim service team in Wilmington, Delaware.
