This a collection of 22 Crime File Study Guides, which provide background information on various criminology subjects discussed by panels in the Crime File television and video series.

Abstract

One study guide reviews modern research on body types, on IQ, and on the criminality of twins and siblings, which suggests that biological factors significantly impact criminal behavior. Another study guide provides information on how often the police use deadly force against civilians or are themselves killed or wounded on duty, the circumstances in which police-civilian violence occurs, trends over time, methods for controlling police use of deadly force, and the applicable legal standards. A third study guide discusses the major issues in the current capital punishment debate and how those for and against capital punishment face these issues. A study guide on domestic violence addresses some of the central policy and empirical issues regarding police responses to allegations of spouse abuse. A study guide on drinking and crime provides overviews of the crime problems caused by excessive drinking and of the preventive and treatment policies now being attempted.
