This reference document, prepared to promote discussion of some of the central issues facing criminal justice practitioners and policymakers, contains information on significant trends in crime and justice as well as a historical overview of crime rate trends and sentencing and corrections practices in the United States.

Abstract

The first section examines perspectives on criminal justice issues related to the impact of truth-in-sentencing and three-strikes legislation on crime, the health care needs of prison and jail inmates, mentally ill inmates, restorative justice and female offenders, the management of sex offenders, case management and aftercare in juvenile corrections, new policy approaches to offender re-entry, the future of community corrections, and victim rights and services. The second section provides historical data on index crime, murder, and drug arrest rates as well as the inmate population, prison releases, and capital punishment.
