In the past 14 years, Prerana, a voluntary organization working on issues related to the protection of victims of commercial sexual exploitation, has benefited over 715 children through the Night Care Center, over 1,000 children through the Education Support program, over 375 children through the Institutional Placement program, and over 5,000 women through a variety of programs and activities including health intervention, social education, empowerment, nutrition and more. In addition, Prerana insisted that the Government of India, as well as others recognize the women and children in prostitution as the victims of commercial sexual exploitation (VOCSE). Prerana started working in the redlight area of Kamathipura Mumbai which is infamous as the most dreaded and largest redlight area in India. Over the years, Prerana has maintained its basic philosophy; to respond creatively to the situations affecting the victims of commercial sexual exploitation. This paper, presented at the 10th United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders held in 2000, describes the overall goals, objectives, programs, activities, and achievements of Prerana.
