Abstract
Presents information on persons under sentence of death on December 31, 2013, and persons executed in 2013. Tables show state-by-state statistics on the movement of prisoners sentenced to death during 2013, the status of capital statutes, and methods of execution. Data include offender characteristics, such as sex, race, Hispanic origin, criminal history, and time between the imposition of a death sentence and execution. The report also summarizes preliminary findings on executions in 2014. Data in this report are from the National Prisoner Statistics (NPS-8) series.
- At yearend 2013, 35 states and the Federal Bureau of Prisons held 2,979 inmates under sentence of death, which was 32 fewer than at yearend 2012.
- In 2014, 7 states executed 35 inmates, which was 4 fewer than the number executed in 2013.
- As of December 31, 2013, all 35 states with death penalty statutes authorized lethal injection as a method of execution.
