DEVELOPMENT OF THE F.A.M.E HAVEN PROJECT IN SARASOTA COUNTY, FLA., TO PROVIDE TEMPORARY SHELTER FOR TRANSIENT AND RUNAWAY YOUTH AND GUIDANCE COUNSELING SERVICES IS EVALUATED.
Abstract
THE PRIMARY F.A.M.E. PROJECT GOAL WAS TO OFFER PREDELINQUENT TRANSIENT AND RUNAWAY YOUTH OF BOTH SEXES AN ALTERNATIVE TO DETENTION AND INVOLVEMENT WITH THE JUDICIAL PROCESS. THE DATABASE FOR PROJECT EVALUATION CONSISTED OF INFORMATION ABOUT ALL YOUTH ADMITTED TO AND SERVED BY THE PROJECT FROM FEBRUARY 1977 THROUGH FEBRUARY 1978 (170 CASES). (THE PROJECT HAD EXPECTED TO SERVE 300 YOUTH FOR THAT YEAR ON A 'BEST GUESS' BASIS, THUS THE PROJECT SHOULD ESTABLISH A MORE REALISTIC OBJECTIVE IN TERMS OF THE TOTAL NUMBER OF CLIENTS SERVED.) FOR RECIDIVISM ANALYSIS, INFORMATION FROM FEBRUARY 1977 THROUGH AUGUST 1977 WAS ALSO USED TO FOLLOWUP ON CLIENTS (70 CASES); PROJECT RESULTS WERE EVALUATED IN TERMS OF SERVICE IDENTIFICATION AND DELIVERY TO THE CLIENT POPULATION AND PREVENTION OF FURTHER DELINQUENCY IN POSTPROJECT YOUTH. WITH REGARD TO RECIDIVISM, THE PROJECT'S SUCCESS RATE WAS 85.7 PERCENT. WITHIN THE PROJECT, ALL CLIENTS WERE PROVIDED WITH MOTIVATIONAL THERAPY AND COUNSELING; COUNSELING SERVICES AVERAGED ABOUT 8.9 HOURS PER YOUTH. OF THE 170 YOUTHS SERVED, 136 OR 80 PERCENT WERE PLACED IN ENVIRONMENTS OTHER THAN DETENTION. CAUTION IS RECOMMENDED IN INTERPRETING THE PROJECT'S SUCCESS RATE DUE TO LIMITED FOLLOWUP INFORMATION ON RECIDIVISM AND THE LARGE NUMBER OF OUT-OF-STATE CLIENTS REPRESENTED IN THE DATA. FOLLOWUP OF ALL YOUTH IS SUGGESTED. SUPPORTING DATA ARE PROVIDED. (DEP)
