This principal source of information about the law enforcement accreditation program explains the process from the time an agency applies for accreditation until it is accredited.
Abstract
General information about the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies is given, and an exposition of the 944 standards included in the Commission's Standards Manual (NCJ-92125) is presented. The text provides an overview of the accreditation process, with additional information about the self-assessment, the onsite assessment, and the Commission's public information policy requirements. Also included is information about applying for accreditation, agency eligibility criteria, and the agency's profile questionnaire. Agency responsibilities in maintaining accreditation once it is achieved are examined, as well as the review and appeal procedures concerning Commission decisions. A final chapter looks at reaccreditation; every 5 years an agency is required to undergo reaccreditation, with a review of its continuing compliance with applicable standards. Footnotes, diagrams, and an index are provided. Appendixes explain steps in the accreditation process and the benefits of accreditation.
