This fact sheet summarizes the amounts, eligibility requirements, program areas, and award process for the Formula Grants program administered by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) to support State and local juvenile delinquency prevention and intervention efforts and juvenile justice system improvements.
Abstract
The program began in 1975 and provides funds to the 50 States, 5 territories, and the District of Columbia on the basis of their proportionate population under age 18. Congress appropriated $89 million for the program in fiscal year 1999. States must commit to achieve and maintain compliance with the requirements for status offender deinstitutionalization, separation of juveniles from adult offenders, adult jail and lockup removal, and disproportionate minority confinement. Funded areas include planning and administration, State advisory groups, compliance monitoring, drug prevention, violence prevention, gang prevention, general juvenile delinquency prevention, police support, and other programs.
