This report provides national estimates of delinquency cases, national estimates of delinquency case processing, and national estimates of petitioned status offense cases.
This report describes delinquency and status offense cases handled between the years 2005 and 2023 by United States courts with juvenile jurisdiction, which may handle a variety of matters including child maltreatment, traffic violations, child support, and adoptions. It focuses on cases that involve juveniles charged with law violations, that is, delinquency or status offenses. The Preface section provides a historical overview of juvenile court statistics and data collection, and follows with four chapters and two appendix documents. The four chapters include the Introduction; National Estimates of Delinquency Cases, with sections including counts and trends, case rates, age at referral, gender, and race; National Estimates of Delinquency Case Processing, with sections including referral, detention, intake decision, waiver, adjudication, dispositions, and case processing; and Chapter four is National Estimates of Petitioned Status Offense Cases, with sections including counts and trends, case rates, age at referral, gender, race, source of referral, detention, adjudication, dispositions, and case processing.
