This discussion guide is intended for use with a video designed to increase the awareness of Indian tribal leaders regarding child abuse in Indian Country.
Abstract
This guide recommends that prior to showing the video, viewers should be informed of the reactions they may experience and be requested to identify the local resources available to provide counseling or other assistance for child abuse victims and their families. Educational handouts prior to viewing the video are also suggested. These handouts may include the signs and symptoms of child abuse as well as local resources available for current and past child abuse victims. Ideas for discussion topics or written handouts are outlined. These include the identification of community groups or agencies that are currently handling child abuse cases in the viewers' communities; the tribal leadership's role in responding to child abuse; how the community as a whole and individual residents can respond to child abuse; jurisdictional issues that obstruct service provision; the use of victim/child advocates to assist child victims and their families through "the system"; and the types of traditional beliefs and healing practices that can be used to make resources culturally relevant to tribal members and families.
