Accomplishments of the United Nations Social Defence Research Institute (UNSDRI) during 1988 are outlined in this annual report.
          Abstract
The UNSDRI is an integral part of the United Nations program in the crime prevention and criminal justice field, and it observed its 20th anniversary in 1988. A new statute for the Institute was approved by the United Nations Committee on Crime Prevention and Control. The Ad Hoc Advisory Group on UNSDRI work program and direction determined that the Institute's work continues to be enhanced, particularly in response to problem-specific needs of developing countries. During 1988, the UNSDRI collaborated with regional United Nations institutes for crime prevention and offender treatment; promoted, coordinated, and conducted international research on drug abuse and illicit narcotics trafficking, drug-related crime, crime control, the death penalty, and children's courts in Latin America; conducted technical support and field activities; and provided library and documentation services. A list of major 1988 UNSDRI events is included.
