This report is the Foundational Resource for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) initiative under STRYVE (Striving To Reduce Youth Violence Everywhere), which is an "umbrella" initiative with several interacting components that contribute to the overarching goal of preventing youth violence.
Abstract
This Foundational Resource for STRYVE presents the conceptual framework for the STRYVE initiative. The material presented is intended for the developers, managers, and implementers of the various STRYVE components. The secondary audience for this Foundational Resource consists of multiple governmental and nongovernmental groups and individuals who have a role in prioritizing, selecting, and implementing youth violence-prevention activities. STRYVE has four components. One component consists of national partnerships, which creates a multi-sector constituency through the STRYVE Action Council and the STRYVE Partnership Network, which builds momentum for prioritizing the prevention of youth violence at the local, State, and national levels and the roles of the public health sector in preventing youth violence. A second STRYVE component is STRYVE Online (http://VetoViolence.cdc.gov/STRYVE), which increases the capacity of communities to plan and implement prevention strategies based on the best available evidence. The third STRYVE component is pilot communities, which provides resources to local public health departments for increasing public health leadership in preventing youth violence. It tests the use of STRYVE tools, training, and technical assistance for preventing youth violence in select communities. The fourth STRYVE component is technical assistance, which consists of providing customized tools, training, and other forms of technical assistance to select communities, in order to facilitate their capacity to prevent youth violence using a public health approach. The material presented outlines the fundamental elements of STRYVE; summarizes the violence-prevention research that guides STRYVE; and explains the guiding STRYVE principles, strategic approaches, and the implementation of strategies for preventing youth violence. 83 references
