Annotation
This training curriculum and materials focuses on the knowledge and skills important for use by foster parents and other out-of-home caregivers in their work with sexually abused children in out-of-home care settings; the curriculum includes a targeted intervention approach based on adaptations of the Boys Town Family Home Program for foster parents and other caregivers.
Abstract
Based on the recognition that sexually abused children often display difficult, dangerous, provocative, and unattractive behaviors, the training is intended to teach foster parents some techniques for dealing with the problematic behaviors of sexually abused children. The 14 sessions aim to help foster parents understand that the way in which families behave teaches children how they should behave, to teach foster parents how to handle inappropriate behaviors, to help foster parents look at all behaviors as appropriate or inappropriate rather than good or bad, to desensitize them to discussions about sexual behavior. It also aims to make foster parents aware of the extreme emotional needs of the sexually abused child and their role as a professional treatment provider and therapeutic agent.
