This report presents the content of the presentations and discussions in a workshop on "Violence Against Women Research Strategic Planning."
Abstract
One topic addressed in the workshop was a coordinated community approach to domestic violence. Among the issues discussed under this topic were the goal and purpose of community intervention; the role and importance of advocacy, community approaches, and research; differences in understanding of current research and investigations; and the understanding of collaboration. A second issue addressed in the workshop was the links between domestic violence and child abuse. Some of the areas of needed research in this area include a conclusive determination that spousal abuse is related to child abuse, children's perspective on domestic violence, and court-based access and the family abuse initiative. A third issue considered in the workshop was public education and prevention of violence against women. Some research matters considered were the effectiveness of various types of public education campaigns and documentation of the social factors that form a barrier to action. Other research topics considered were improvement in responses to the victim and interventions for batterers.
