This paper briefly describes Fiji's general court system and the juvenile justice system, juvenile processing (case investigation, prosecution, adjudication, and treatment), juvenile crime patterns, and specific problems in the operation of Fiji's juvenile justice system.
Abstract
The discussion of Fiji's juvenile justice system focuses on the principal juvenile statute, the age of criminal responsibility, police options in processing juveniles, and legislative mandates of the police prosecution of juveniles. The juvenile treatment philosophy is reviewed, including the care, protection, or control of juveniles in need of supervision. Law and procedures governing juvenile probation are also reviewed. The analysis of juvenile crime patterns focuses on the years 1977-82 and encompasses aggregate offenses and offenses classified as against property, against persons, and against morality. The discussion of specific problems of the juvenile justice system and its administration pertains to investigation, prosecution, adjudication, interagency cooperation, and treatment. Tabular data on juvenile crime patterns are provided.
