METHODS OF RECRUITING AND SELECTING CLIENTS FOR A COMMUNITY YOUTH WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAM ARE DESCRIBED IN THE SEVENTH GUIDE IN A SERIES DOCUMENTING THE NOSR MODEL APPLICATION PROCESS.
Abstract
RECRUITMENT IS DESCRIBED AS THE ACTIVITY SEQUENCE THAT INCLUDES THE PROGRAM'S FIRST CONTACT WITH THE CLIENT COMMUNITY. BECAUSE RECRUITMENT SETS THE TONE FOR THE PROGRAM AND INDICATES A LEVEL OF EXPECTATION, PROGRAM DESIGNERS ARE URGED TO PROJECT AN ACCURATE IMAGE OF THE PROGRAM'S POTENTIAL IN THE RECRUITMENT EFFORT. INITIAL CONSIDERATIONS IN PLANNING THE RECRUITMENT ACTIVITIES ARE NOTED, INCLUDING THE NEED TO CLEARLY ASSESS AND DELINEATE THE TARGET CLIENT POPULATION, THE LOCATION OF THAT POPULATION, THE LIKELIHOOD OF COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IN THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS, AND METHODS OF REACHING THE TARGET POPULATION. SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPLEMENTING A GENERAL PUBLICITY CAMPAIGN THROUGH PUBLIC MEDIA ARE OFFERED, AS ARE GUIDELINES FOR ESTABLISHING REFERRAL CONTACTS. CONSIDERATIONS IN DESIGNING THE APPLICATION PROCESS AND RELATED FORMS ARE NOTED, AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A RECRUITMENT CALENDAR IS DISCUSSED. THREE METHODS OF CLIENT SELECTION -- RANDOM SELECTION, 'FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED,' AND 'SLOT ALLOCATION' -- ARE DESCRIBED, AS ARE STEPS IN ESTABLISHING THE SCREENING PROCESS ONCE THE GENERAL METHOD OF SELECTING HAS BEEN CHOSEN. A COMPUTER-ASSISTED METHOD OF INITIATING THE PROGRAM'S EVALUATION COMPONENT AT THE SCREENING STAGE IS OUTLINED. THE FORMAL ENROLLMENT PROCEDURE IS DESCRIBED. A SAMPLE PROGRAM APPLICATION FORM IS APPENDED. FOR A RELATED DOCUMENT AND OTHER NOSR GUIDES, SEE NCJ 44987-44993, 44995, AND 44996.
