This August 1985 hearing of a U.S. Senate subcommittee, held in Lexington, Ky., focused on Federal legislation that would help fund State clearinghouses to locate missing children and on current statistics on the numbers and types of missing children.
Abstract
Witnesses included local government agency officials, representatives of private agencies and an advocacy organization, the mother of a missing child, and a representative of Kentucky State Police Missing Child Information Center. The witnesses and legislators noted that most missing children are runaways or victims of parental abductions. However, these children are at great risk of exploitation and abuse. The proposed legislation would provide grants to States to either establish and operate or to expand and operate statewide clearinghouses that would link the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children with local law enforcement agencies. Written statements are included.
