Two brief articles discuss how to get the best images from closed circuit television (CCTV).
Abstract
The light component in getting good images from CCTV cameras under poor lighting conditions is becoming easier to manage thanks to microprocessors, which are now able to compensate for larger variations of light in a scene. Backlight compensation in DSP cameras can be programmed or done automatically to get a more even exposure of a scene. The next technological breakthroughs will be the evolution of the CMOS camera, which will have the same resolution and sensitivity as the CCD camera but at a lower price, and increased integration of camera and lens. The choice of a wiring system for any CCTV installation is determined by the environment and potential application; cost is also an important consideration. Coaxial, twisted pair, fiber optic, RF, microwave and IR wireless all have advantages and disadvantages. The most common choice is coaxial cable, followed by fiber optics, RF and microwave, with the most growth in use of twisted pair and fiber optics.
