COLLECTION OF ARTICLES PRESENTING THEORETICAL AND EMPIRICAL DISCUSSIONS OF THE CONCEPT OF LAW, THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL VARIABLES ON ITS FORMATION, THE ADMINISTRATION OF LAW, AND THE IMPACT OF LAW ON SOCIETY.
Abstract
FOLLOWING THE INTRODUCTION, THE AUTHORS DISCUSS LAW AS A TYPE OF SOCIAL CONTROL AND A COMPARATIVE DEFINITION OF LAW. PART 2, WHICH DEALS WITH SOCIAL AND POLITICAL FORCES ON THE LAW - LAW AS DEPENDENT, PRESENTS SEVERAL STUDIES WHICH EMPHASIZE THE ACTIVITIES OF INTEREST GROUPS AS THE MAIN FORCE IN THE CHANGES IN THE LAW. THESE STUDIES ARE CONCERNED WITH LEGAL EVOLUTION AND SOCIETAL COMPLEXITY, A SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF THE LAW OF VAGRANCY, A SOCIOLOGY OF CRIMINAL LAW, THE PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION AND THE LEGAL REGULATION OF PRACTICE, AND A REVISION OF THE NEW YORK STATE PENAL LAW ON PROSTITUTION. IN DISCUSSING ORGANIZATION AND PROCESS IN THE ADMINISTRATION OF LAW AND CONTROL, THREE ARTICLES ARE PRESENTED WHICH DEAL WITH POLICE CONTROL OF JUVENILES, VIOLENCE AND THE POLICE, AND SECURING POLICE COMPLIANCE WITH CONSTITUTIONAL LIMITATIONS. ARTICLES DEALING WITH DISPOSITION OF CASES IN CONTROL AGENCIES INCLUDE IMAGES OF MAN AND SOCIAL CONTROL, DISPOSITION WITHOUT TRIAL, THE PRACTICE OF LAW AS A CONFIDENCE GAME, THE SOCIETAL REACTION TO DEVIANCE, SMALL CLAIMS COURT, AND THE INSTITUTIONALIZATION OF CONFLICT - JURY ACQUITTALS. A SECTION ON CORRECTIONAL ORGANIZATIONS (POST-DISPOSITION CONTROL AGENCIES) COVERS CRIMINAL PUNISHMENT AND PSYCHIATRIC FALLACIES AND INMATE ORGANIZATION - SEX DIFFERENTIATION AND THE INFLUENCE OF CRIMINAL SUBCULTURES. THE FINAL PART OF THE BOOK DEALS WITH LAW AS AN INDEPENDENT VARIABLE, AND THE ARTICLES PRESENTED EXAMINE THE LAW'S EFFECT ON BEHAVIOR AND ATTITUDES.
