THE LARGE INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF BURGLARIES HAS SHOWN THE NEED FOR BETTER CRIME PREVENTION MEASURES; SOME BURGLARY-PREVENTION TECHNIQUES ARE DESCRIBED IN THIS FILM WHICH IS DIRECTED AT THE GENERAL PUBLIC.
Abstract
NEARLY HALF OF ALL PERSONS ARRESTED FOR BURGLARY ARE UNDER THE AGE OF 17, AND MOST BURGLARIES HAPPEN DURING THE DAY. THE STATISTICS SHOW THAT IT IS A CRIME OF OPPORTUNITY WHICH IS LIKE AN ADDICTION. ONCE A PERSON STARTS STEALING THINGS, IT IS VERY HARD TO STOP. THEREFORE, THE AIM OF CRIME PREVENTION IS TO REMOVE THE EASY OPPORTUNITIES FOR CRIME AND TO PUT AN END TO IMPULSIVE CRIMES. IN ORDER TO RECOGNIZE OPPORTUNITIES FOR CRIME, THE PATROL OFFICER MUST LOOK AT EVERYTHING FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE BURGLAR. THAT WAY, HE WILL BE ABLE TO NOTICE POTENTIAL BREAK-IN POINTS. BECAUSE PROPER DOOR SECURITY IS NECESSARY TO KEEP PEOPLE OUT, THE FILM SHOWS DIFFERENT TYPES OF DOOR LOCKS AND RECOMMENDS WHICH ONES ARE MOST EFFECTIVE. OTHER IMPORTANT AREAS OF SECURITY ARE AIR CONDITIONING VENTS, WINDOWS, AND TRANSOMS. EACH OF THESE AREAS SHOULD BE CHECKED REGULARLY TO SEE THAT THEY ARE SECURE AND THAT NO ONE CAN ENTER THROUGH THEM. PROPERTY OWNERS ARE REMINDED THAT THE COST OF REPAIRING PLACES SO BURGLARS CANNOT ENTER IS LESS THAN THE POTENTIAL COST RESULTING FROM BURGLARY. BURGLARS ARE GENERALLY DETERRED BY LIGHT AND LOUD NOISE, SO ADEQUATE OUTDOOR LIGHTING IS SUGGESTED. POLICE ALSO RECOMMEND THE USE OF BURGLAR ALARMS AND MARKED MERCHANDISE, SO IF THERE IS A BURGLARY, THE STOLEN GOODS CAN BE TRACED. THROUGH THESE VARIOUS METHODS OF CRIME PREVENTION, THE OPPORTUNITIES FOR AN EASY BURGLARY WILL BE REMOVED, THEREFORE REDUCING THE TOTAL NUMBER OF CRIMES. AN INSTRUCTOR'S MANUAL IS INCLUDED. (BAC)
