COMPLETE DETAILS OF THE IMPORTANT INTERNATIONAL SECURITY EQUIPMENT IN USE AND IN DEVELOPMENT THROUGHOUT THE WORLD ARE PRESENTED.
Abstract
TO PROVIDE LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES AND INTERESTED PERSONS WITH INFORMATION ON THE TOOLS USED TO COMBAT CRIME AND TERRORISM, THIS BOOK PRESENTS DATA ON THE SPECIFICATIONS AND DEPLOYMENT OF VARIOUS EQUIPMENT. ALTHOUGH INSURRECTIONS IN RURAL AREAS MAY BE FOUGHT WITH MODIFIED CONVENTIONAL WEAPONS, URBAN ENVIRONMENT COUNTERWARFARE REQUIRES THE DEVELOPMENT AND USE OF SPECIAL PURPOSE EQUIPMENT. THEREFORE MUCH OF THE DESCRIBED EQUIPMENT SERVES THE PARTICULAR REQUIREMENTS OF RIOT CONTROL UNITS AND FACILITY SECURITY FORCES. THE RANGE OF INTERNAL SECURITY EQUIPMENT INCLUDES ARMORED CARS PRODUCED BY FIAT AND MERCEDES-BENZ, TEAR GAS GRENADES FROM FABRIQUE NATIONALE AND ALSATEX, AND SURVEILLANE CAMERAS DEVELOPED BY PHILLIPS AND CHUBB. MANY OF THE DESCRIBED DEVICES ARE USED BY THE ROYAL ULSTER CONSTABULARY IN NORTHERN IRELAND. PLASTIC SHIELDS, RUBBER PROJECTILES, AND ANTIRIOT BATONS HAVE PROVEN EFFECTIVE FOR CROWD CONTROL SITUATIONS. AN INTERNATIONAL CROSS SECTION REPRESENTING THE CATEGORIES OF GAS MASKS, GRENADES, AND FIREARMS INDICATES THE VARIETY OF DEVICES AVAILABLE. BOMB DISPOSAL VEHICLES, DETONATORS, AND SUPPRESSION BLANKETS SUPPLIED TO SEVERAL COUNTRIES ARE DESCRIBED. SOME ITEMS, SUCH AS MINE DETECTORS AND FIELD RADAR SETS, WERE DEVELOPED FOR MILITARY APPLICATIONS, BUT ARE SUITABLE FOR INTERNAL SECURITY. CONTINUED DEVELOPMENTS IN BODY ARMOR, PROTECTIVE HEADGEAR, AND SHATTERPROOF WINDOW LAMINATES ARE DESCRIBED. ILLUSTRATIONS ARE PROVIDED WITH MOST OF THE EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTIONS. (TWK)
