TWO MAIN CONSIDERATIONS IN GROUPING PROBATIONERS INTO THE SUPERVISION CATEGORIES WERE APPRAISING SERVICE NEEDS FOR ADEQUATE ADJUSTMENT OF OFFENDERS INTO THE COMMUNITY AND ASSESSING THE AMOUNT OF CONTROL REQUIRED TO PROTECT THE COMMUNITY. THE CASE RECORDS OF 720 OFFENDERS REPRESENTING 22 PERCENT OF THE ADULTS UNDER PROBATION SUPERVISION IN SUFFOLK COUNTY WERE ANALYZED TO DETERMINE THE NUMBER AND CHARACTERISTICS OF PROBATIONERS WHO REQUIRE INTENSIVE SUPERVISION AND TO IDENTIFY THE TYPE OF PRIMARY BEHAVIOR DYSFUNCTIONS TO FACILITATE PROGRAM PLANNING. RESULTS INDICATE A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF PROBATIONERS REQUIRE MULTIPLE SERVICES AND INTENSIVE SUPERVISION AND THAT THERE EXISTS AN ALCOHOL-ABUSE PROBATION POPULATION ALMOST AS LARGE AS THE NARCOTICS-ABUSE POPULATION.
