The declaration unanimously adopted by an international conference sponsored by the United Nations in June 1987 reaffirmed the political will of the participating nations to commit themselves to vigorous international action against drug abuse and trafficking.
Abstract
It also sets forth suggested action priorities and emphasizes the pivotal role of governments in developing appropriate national strategies within which measures to strengthen international cooperation can be developed. The declaration also recognizes the roles of the United Nations and nongovernmental organizations. The conference also unanimously adopted an outline of practical actions to be taken by governments, the United Nations, intergovernmental and regional organizations, nongovernmental organizations, academic institutions, and individuals. It set 35 action targets to be attained over the next 10 to 15 years. These actions include demand reduction, control of supplies, suppression of trafficking, and treatment and rehabilitation. Index.
