This is a report on the meeting of the United Nations Intergovernmental Working Group on the Creation of an Effective International Crime and Justice Program, held in Vienna, Austria, on August 5-9, 1991.
Abstract
A section on the organization of the meeting provides information on the opening and duration of the meeting, attendance, the election of officers, the agenda, and documentation. The report on meeting discussions summarizes the debate on the establishment of a more effective international crime and justice program. Participants agreed on the necessity of strengthening international cooperation in crime prevention and criminal justice. They further agreed that the United Nations program in these areas should be reinforced. Participants composed a draft resolution and recommended its adoption by the United Nations General Assembly. One recommendation of the resolution is that the United Nations crime prevention and criminal justice program provide states with practical assistance such as data collection, information and experience sharing, and training. Another proposal is that the Economic and Social Council discontinue the Committee on Crime Prevention and Control and establish a Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. Appended statement of principles and program of action of the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice program and a list of documents before the Intergovernmental Working Group.
