The crime victimization survey questioned students and teachers in the Chicago area about victimization from personal crimes (such as theft and assault) during 2 months in 1980.
Abstract
About 62,500 students (25 percent) in grades 7 through 12 have something stolen from them in a 2-month period. About 8,250 students are physically attacked, and 6,250 students are robbed. Teachers reporting victimization through robbery numbered 6,750 (27 percent). The number of teachers reporting physical attack was 443, or 1.77 percent, and 100 teachers were robbed. These estimates are projections from a sample of 12,882 students out of a population of approximately 250,000 and a sample of 1,413 teachers out of a population of 24,000. The Chicago victimization rates for both students and teachers are below national averages for cities over 250,000 in population. Numerous graphs are provided. (Author abstract modified)
