These police training videos focus on rape investigations and feature former New York Police Department Detective Sergeant Harry O'Reilly, who has extensive experience in rape investigations; Dr. Michael West, a specialist in forensic photography; and Detective Roger Smith, who specializes in case development.
Abstract
The videotapes present background information and detailed instructions on crime scene preservation, hair and fiber collection, the documentation of hidden wounds, skills for interviewing victims, and methods for acquiring confessions. Using graphic dramatizations, the films depict a forcible rape involving major injuries and describe the police officer's role at the crime scene, at the hospital, and in subsequent interviews. The instructions emphasize that rape is completely different from other crimes with respect to its psychological victimization impacts and that the most important skills involved in interviewing victims are sensitivity and compassion. The need for communication and case management skills is also emphasized. One videotape is directed primarily to the patrol officer, one to the technician, and one to the investigator. The manuals present background information, forms, and checklists
