This manual outlines preventive approaches to reduce vandalism and school-related crimes, with attention to programs that involve students and the community.
Abstract
Factors associated with high levels of school violence and property loss are outlined, as are general suggestions to combat these problems. More specific measures against vandalism and theft are detailed, beginning with fair enforcement of a firm code of conduct within the school. Also discussed are enforcement against loitering and school intruders, restitution made by offending youths or parents, and education of the community about school vandalism. Examples of relevant California laws and school regulations are included. Elements that administrators should consider in planning a prevention program are reviewed. The guide then describes various types of preventive projects categorized as: school and community pride and awareness, neighborhood watch/parent alert, student-centered projects, curriculum programs, and alternative education. Examples include a poster contest on vandalism, rewards for anonymous individuals providing information which helps to identify vandals, student security advisory councils, classes on conflict resolution and juvenile codes, and vocational education. A checklist to determine student and staff attitudes toward the school is appended.
