This article reports on the features and benefits of an app released by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) that helps houses of worship (HOW) assess their risk factors for various kinds of security threats that have been increasing for buildings and groups associated with religious services and programs.
Abstract

Distributed through NIJ's Justice Technology Information Center (JTIC) to vetted public safety professionals, the app entitled, "Safeguarding Houses of Worship," can be a way for local law enforcement agencies to connect with HOW in their jurisdictions. Whether local police agencies choose to work with HOW on a one-to-one basis or hold local workshops/planning meetings to discuss the need for a safety plan, the availability of the app helps law enforcement agencies work together with HOW to make communities safer. The app guides a user through a series of questions intended to assist a HOW in evaluating the current safety and security posture of its campus, as well as prioritizing threats and making recommendations for improvement in security measures. Template texts provide assistance in developing job descriptions, policies, and procedures.
