Documentation for Analysis of Violence Against American Indian and Alaska Native Women and Men - 2010 Findings From the National Intimate Partner And Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS) by the National Institute of Justice

The NISVS was launched in 2010 by the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, with the support of the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and the Department of Defense. In 2010, data were collected from three samples: a general population sample of adult women and men, an over- sample of American Indian and Alaska Native women and men, and a sample of female active duty military and female spouses of active duty military. This technical report provides a detailed description of the data cleaning and analysis activities by NIJ for the first two of the three samples - the general population sample (N = 18,957) and the American Indian and Alaska Native over-sample (N = 3,612). The NISVS has the following eight victimization sections: psychological aggression; coercive control and entrapment; physical violence; elder abuse (psychological aggression, coercive control and entrapment, and physical violence); stalking; and sexual violence. Details for each of these survey sections are provided, followed by a summary of data cleaning. Respondent-level files and perpetrator-level files are presented in a series of chapters. An overview of the stalking follow-up survey questions is provided, along with victimization estimates and overviews of sections on intimate partner violence, respondent characteristics, and health. Final data files are created and documented in one chapter, and final codebooks are presented separately in appendixes. Appended syntax files
