COMMUNITIES RECEIVE OVER $2.8 MILLION IN JUSTICE
DEPARTMENT FUNDS TO MANAGE SEX OFFENDERS
WASHINGTON, DC ? Twenty-one communities in seventeen states
received a total of $2.8 million to develop, implement or expand comprehensive
strategies to manage sex offenders under community supervision, the Justice
Department announced today.? These
awards mark the third year of the Justice Department?s Comprehensive Approaches
to Sex Offender Management Grant program, which is administered by the Office
of Justice Programs? (OJP) Corrections Program Office.
?Sex offenders who are released from prison must be
closely supervised so that they can live in the community without posing a
danger to others,? said OJP Assistant Attorney General Deborah J. Daniels.? ?These grants will help communities monitor
and treat sex offenders through a comprehensive, systemic approach.?
To receive funds under the Comprehensive Approaches to
Sex Offender Management Grant program, communities must develop
multi-disciplinary teams, which include law enforcement, probation and parole
officers, other criminal justice personnel, courts, treatment providers and
victim advocates.? Eleven of the awards
are planning grants to assist jurisdictions in developing comprehensive,
collaborative approaches to managing sex offenders.? The other?
ten
grants will help communities implement these strategies or enhance current
programs.
Using these grant funds, multi-disciplinary teams will
identify strengths and weaknesses in sex offender management systems and assess
the staff and equipment necessary to identify, track and treat sex
offenders.? Planning funds will also be
used to gauge the need for training probation officers and other criminal
justice personnel, treatment providers and victim advocates about sex offender
management.??????????????????
?We all have a responsibility to ensure that sex
offenders, once released from prison, are successfully reintegrated into
society with no threat to their communities,? added Daniels.? ?By doing so we can ease the fears of
parents and other concerned citizens.?
Congress appropriated $5 million for sex offender
management initiatives in Fiscal Year 2001, $3 million of which was set aside
for the grants.? Training and technical
assistance will be
provided
to grantees and other interested jurisdictions through a grant to the Center
for Sex
Offender
Management in Silver Spring, Maryland.?
