The Urban Forestry Project was instituted in Portland (Oregon) to enhance the quality of urban settings while cultivating business and technical skills among at-risk youth.
Abstract
The model combines academic study with income-producing work. It is similar in many ways to Junior Achievement, where youth are involved in research, marketing, producing, supplying, and investing in the business enterprise. The program is designed to involve 100 youths per year. These youths will have the opportunity to: (1) earn income based upon wages and incentives; (2) gain meaningful and visible curriculum-based hands-on work experience; (3) internalize a sense of empowerment; and (4) develop their ability to be decision-makers and problem-solvers in their own communities.
