A questionnaire survey was sent to correctional education directors in all 50 States to examine wage plans and salaries of teachers in correctional facilities.
Abstract
Results indicate that in some States, teachers were covered by the same wage plan as other State career service employees; in others, there was a separate, but Statewide wage plan; while in still others, each correctional institution had its own wage arrangement. Almost all States provided a range of hiring rates for correctional teachers based on academic credentials, certification, and experience. Certification, advanced degrees, and experience were almost always required for advancement. Most States provided a wide range of salary schedules depending on geographic location, institution mission, and placement of the institution within the State's educational or public service system. Entry salaries ranged from $15,072 in Kentucky to $25,220 in Wisconsin. In some States maximum salary ranges varied, while other States showed ranges between $20,652 (Missouri) and $48,000 (Indiana). Years to maximum salary ranged from 6 (Illinois) to 20 (Indiana). Salaries for teachers in Federal prisons ranged from $14,822 to $35,326. The developing teacher shortage generally has resulted in significant wage increases for teachers. 5 references.
