THIS PAPER DEFINES WHAT IS MEANT BY LOW LIGHT LEVEL TELEVISION (LLLTV) AND EXPLAINS HOW THE VARIOUS TYPES OF LLLTV CAMERAS COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE TODAY DIFFER IN PERFORMANCE AND CAPABILITIES.
Abstract
THE THREE CLASSES OF COMMERCIAL LLLTV CAMERAS ARE DISCUSSED AND THE ATTRIBUTES AND SHORTCOMINGS OF EACH CLASS ARE INTRODUCED. ESSENTIAL ELEMENT OF SENSITIVITY IS USED TO CATEGORIZE THESE INSTRUMENTS. THE PROBLEM OF DYNAMIC RANGE, I.E., OPERATION OVER A WIDE RANGE OF ILLUMINATION CONDITIONS, IS INTRODUCED AND TECHNIQUES FOR SOLVING THIS PROBLEM ARE DISCUSSED. THE PAPER ENDS WITH A DISCUSSION OF WHAT THE NEXT GENERATION OF COMMERCIAL LLLTV CAMERAS WILL PROBABLY BE AND HOW THEY WILL COMPARE WITH INSTRUMENTS AVAILABLE TODAY. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
