NCJ Number

A survey was conducted of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico to determine the extent to which jurisdictions meet criteria for judicial fringe benefits developed by the American Bar Association Committee on State Judicial Salaries and Compensation.
Abstract
Criteria set forth minimum standards for pensions, retirement fund contributions, compensation for post-retirement service, disability coverage, death benefits, life insurance, health and medical insurance, dental coverage, immunity from liability, representation and reimbursement of fees in actions against judges, expense reimbursements, and leave (vacation, sick, maternity, educational, and holiday leaves and sabbaticals). Tables rank the States according to whether they meet or exceed criteria, provide for the benefit but fall below criteria, or have no provisions for the benefit for appellate, general jurisdiction, and special or limited jurisdiction court judges. State-by-State summaries describe the available benefits including eligibility requirements, persons covered by the benefit, deductibles, contributions and/or cost of coverages. 3 tables and 3 notes.
