REPORT ON THE RESULTS OF A STUDY TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT AND TYPE OF COMMUNICATION TRAINING PROVIDED POLICE OFFICERS, WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE TRAINING, AND THE SKILLS CONSIDERED RELEVANT BY POLICE AGENCIES.
Abstract
DATA WERE COLLECTED BY MEANS OF A SEVEN-ITEM QUESTIONNAIRE ADMINISTERED TO 1700 CHIEFS OF POLICE SELECTED FROM THE 1974 IACP (INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CHIEFS OF POLICE) DIRECTORY. RESPONSES WERE RECEIVED FROM 554 OF THEM. THE RESULTS INDICATE THAT EXTENSIVE AND VARIED PROGRAMS EXIST AND THAT THE RESPONDENTS DEMONSTRATE A MARKED INTEREST IN AND APPRECIATION FOR COMMUNICATIONS TRAINING. IT WAS ALSO FOUND THAT THE EXPECTATIONS AND NEEDS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES DO NOT PARALLEL THOSE OF ACADEMIA FOR COMUNICATIONS TRAINING. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE FOR THE IMPROVEMENT IN APPLYING COMMUNICATIONS TRAINING TECHNIQUES TO LAW ENFORCEMENT SITUATIONS....EB
