RESULTS OF AN ANALYSIS OF 209 QUESTIONNAIRES RETURNED BY CORRECTIONAL STAFF IN WHICH STAFF ATTITUDES ON AIMS OF INCARCERATION, EFFECTS OF PRISON PROGRAMS, AND COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION WERE ASSESSED.
Abstract
THE STUDY WAS CONDUCTED AT THE BRITISH COLUMBIA PENITENTIARY AND THE MATSQUI INSTITUTION IN ORDER TO ENABLE COMPARISONS BETWEEN A MAXIMUM AND MEDIUM SECURITY INSTITUTIONS. QUESTIONNAIRES WERE DISTRIBUTED TO 300 STAFF MEMBERS. INFORMATION WAS SOLICITED ON LENGTH OF EMPLOYMENT, EDUCATION, JOB RESPONSIBILITIES, AND EXTENT AND NATURE OF CONTACT WITH COMMUNITY GROUPS IN THE PRISON. QUESTIONS WERE ALSO ASKED ON THE PERCEIVED AIMS OF INCARCERATION; EVALUATION OF PROGRAMS; ATTITUDES REGARDING THE PARTICIPATION OF WOMEN, EX-CONVICTS, AND INMATES' FAMILY MEMBERS; AND THE EXTENT TO WHICH CITIZEN PARTICIPATION ACTIVITIES AFFECTED INDIVIDUAL JOBS AND THE PRISON ROUTINE. UNIVARIATE ANALYSIS OF ALL VARIABLES WAS CONDUCTED. IN ADDITION, BIVARIATE ANALYSIS OF THE SERVICE LENGTH, EDUCATION, JOB TYPE AND COMMUNITY CONTACT VARIABLES WITH ALL OTHER VARIABLES WAS CONDUCTED. RESULTS ARE DISCUSSED AND IMPLICATIONS FOR CORRECTIONAL POLICY ARE SUGGESTED.
