DATA WERE COLLECTED ON 283 JUVENILE OFFENDERS CONSECUTIVELY DISCHARGED FROM SOUTH CAROLINA FAMILY COURTS TO DETERMINE THE USE OF ALCOHOL, MARIJUANA, AND DRUGS BY JUVENILES AND ALCOHOL BY THEIR PARENTS.
Abstract
THE RESULTS INDICATED THAT THERE WERE MAJOR RACIAL DIFFERENCES ON MOST VARIABLES AND THAT ON ALL INDICATORS OF SUBSTANCE USE (EXCEPT MOTHERS' ALCOHOL USE) WHITE WERE HEAVIER USERS THAN BLACKS. FURTHERMORE, THERE WAS A CONSISTENT POSITIVE INTERRELATIONSHIP BETWEEN JUVENILE SUBSTANCE USE AND PARENTAL ALCOHOL USE. FATHERS' ALCOHOL USE WAS POSITIVELY RELATED TO ALL JUVENILE SUBSTANCE USE VARIABLES BUT MOTHERS' ALCOHOL USE WAS POSITIVELY RELATED TO JUVENILE SUBSTANCE USE FOR WHITES ONLY. FINALLY, THE PATTERN OF RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES AND SUBSTANCE USE VARIABLES DEPENDED BOTH ON THE RACE OF THE SUBJECTS AND THE TYPE OF SUBSTANCE USED.
