THIS ARTICLE EXAMINES THE VARIED APPROACHES TO SOCIAL SERVICES FOR RUNAWAY YOUTH AND THE GROUPS DELIVERING THEM.
Abstract
EACH APPROACH HAS SOME UNIQUE ELEMENTS: THE COMPOSITION (WHO DOES IT), THE MANDATE (HOW IT IS AUTHORIZED TO ACT), THE GEOGRAPHY (WHERE IT FUNCTIONS), THE GOALS (WHY IT IS BEING DONE), AND THE CONSTRAINTS (WHAT THREATENS CONTINUANCE). SEVEN STYLES OF SERVICE ARE DESCRIBED: THE ENTREPRENEUR STYLE (MINISTER, 'FOSTER PARENT', VOLUNTEER); THE COMMITTEE STYLE (ALLIES-IN-THE-CAUSE, SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER, PSYCHOLOGIST, ETC.); THE AGENCY STYLE (SOCIAL SERVICE AGENCY, CRISIS AND HOT LINES, FREE CLINICS, ETC); THE LEGAL STYLE (JUVENILE COURT, POLICE DEPARTMENTS, YOUTH BUREAUS); THE PURIST STYLE (RUNAWAY HOUSES); THE COMPLEX STYLE (GOVERNMENT SOCIAL SERVICES); AND THE ADVOCACY STYLE (NATIONAL COUNCIL ON CRIME AND DELINQUENCY, NATIONAL YOUTH ALTERNATIVES PROJECT, ETC.).
