AN ASSESSEMNT OF NEGLECT OF CRIMINOLOGICAL RESEARCH WITH REASONS OFFERED FOR SUCH NEGLECT AND PROJECTIONS FOR THE FUTURE.
Abstract
REASONS ADVANCED FOR NEGLECT INCLUDE THE WIDELY HELD NOTION THAT CRIMINOLOGY IS A DEVELOPING, UNTRIED DISCIPLINE, THE POPULAR BELIEF THAT THE LEGAL PROFESSION IS THE MOST COMPETENT FIELD ENCOMPASSING THE STUDY OF CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR, AND THE FEAR THAT THE SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION OF DEVIANT BEHAVIOR IS AIMED AT CODDLING CRIMINALS AND DECRIMINALIZING BASIC VALUES OF SOCIETY. THE STATE OF THE ART OF CRIMINOLOGY IS DESCRIBED, AND ITS FUTURE ADVANCEMENT IS SEEN TO BE RELATED TO SHOWING THE RELEVANCY OF THE ACADEMIC DISCIPLINE TO THE NEEDS AND RESOURCES OF GOVERNMENT.
